Where we need to put our efforts

Education
Louisiana has received failing grades in every survey. Our children are our future and we need to invest in our teachers, schools and students. Our test scores on a national level must come up. We must have vocational programs for those students who are not seeking college. We must have IT programs in place to prepare our children to take advantage of technology. We must be prepared to support online as well as classroom based options.

Infrastructure
As I travel this district I see many improvements to our roadways, then some areas that are deplorable.  The proposed I-49 corridor. The slow progress on 3235. The slow progress on Connecting Port Fourchon to 3235. I will work with the LA 1 Coalition.

Louisiana Seafood, Beef, Pork and Chicken
Our fishing boats sit idle and some restaurants are serving imported shrimp, crab and oysters. There is talk of euthanizing our cattle because we have a ample supply from overseas. We used to export chicken, now we import chicken from China. And instead of taking advantage of a Gulf full of fish, we import fish from countries where they are raised in sewerage and pumped full of antibiotics.

Coastal Erosion
Grand Isle, the southern tip of District 54 is washing away. I have seen the Mayor on a machine in the middle of the night working feverishly to shore up a failing levee as a hurricane was approaching. Efforts currently underway to rebuild the coast must be continued.

Employment
Right now the employment is suffering throughout the country, families are devastated. I believe that our economy will recover, but it will take work. Oil that was - $37 a barrel weeks ago is rebounding with oilfield support services at Port Fourchon showing a little improvement. District 54 has to make wise decisions on our fragile oil field businesses.

Business Development
We have a Parish President in the District who favors New Business Development. I believe that we need to work with him in this endeavor. The tourism aspect of this District is a business and its unlimited potential must be developed to its full capacity.

Our Veterans
I have been behind a move to bring Bayou Chapter 9, Disabled American Veterans DAV to District 54.  It has happened and will be located in The American Legion in Lockport.  That DAV site will offer transportation to Vets, Assistance with Claims for Benefits and other related issues.
